Spanning is an attempt to reach into and across real and imagined voids and the distances between reality and illusion. Considering the inverse: shadows, gulfs, chasms and voids; reflecting the paradoxical experience of isolation and fragmentation in a frenetically connected world, where messages shouted out loud are met with obfuscation or echoed back unanswered.

Anchored by a dialogue between the performers and the “Void” the work emerges from the frustrations of powerlessness, misdirection and the impenetrability of the narratives of the powerful. We scream into the void, shouting down conspiracies we are told aren’t happening while we have them in plain sight, our voices drowned out with unhearing messages repeating louder and stronger.

In reaching across distance between what is said and what is meant, what is true, what is enacted, this work emulates the digital with the analogue and material, gesturing to the possibilities of technology from very far away. Back in Plato’s cave, the reality we understand is not the whole story - was that truth or…shadow?
